Thats The Way He'll Always Be!
I have been called many things in my life. Daffy, loony, crazy, hyper, even verbose. I say, 'guilty' on all counts and say so with conviction. One thing I am also is a fan of history and dates within. The day you avoid your history, it's a sure bet you will repeat it. Oh, to repeat the standard we said goodbye to 29 years ago today.
Walter Cronkite was without a doubt 'the most trusted man in America'. The face we saw get emotional when JFK was assassinated, and when we landed on the Moon in 1969. He worked in the fields during the height of the Vietnam War. We also welcomed him into our homes as the nightly anchor on CBS Nightly News.
This day in 1981 we saw Walter Cronkite say his trademark, 'And that's the way it was.' for a final time. Dan Rather took his place when in truth no one ever could or ever will. Forever a curious nature with an incredible desire to get to the meat of a story, very few walked the same steps that Walter Cronkite walked.
He left us in July of 2009. He will never be equaled. If there were to be a Mount Rushmore of people who shaped a nation by their ability to report, I would post the faces of Cronkite, Howard Cosell, Johnny Carson, and Edward R. Murrow. 4 unique personalities that we will never see equaled again.
R.I.P. Walt. That's the way I'm telling it...
Over and out in Big D
