Defending Peyton Place...

Another memorable football season has come and gone. In the aftermath of what the Saints did to eliminate 42 years of futility and heartache, some random thoughts about what went down yesterday in Miami...

1. The most priceless moment in Miami yesterday was when Drew Brees had his little heart to heart with his son. I fought back tears as Drew git emotional. That is a connection that all Dads should be lucky enough to have in life. That was a real moment. Something most Super Bowls tend to lack in the name of shameless promotion and below the belt humor in the name of a commercial.

2.To anyone who thinks Peyton Manning lost the game Sunday, guess what? A quarterback can only throw the ball in your direction. It is imperative that an intended receiver finish his route and CATCH the ball that is in his vicinity. When you fail to do that, you ask for bad karma and a loss.

3.The onside kick by New Orleans to start the second half by a kicker with SMU stats was pure stones, baby! I loved it. That was when I knew Sean Payton would stop at nothing to win. Think about it. All week along the press and media were aiming their praise and focus on the WRONG Payton/Peyton. A phonetic bit of irony there I'd say...

4.I had no beef with Peyton wanting to shake hands with Drew. It was the Saints moment. I am willing to bet you would have heard the 'he's hogging the spotlight' argument had he done so. The field was a state of bedlam. Let Mr. Manning go off quietly. I'm okay with that.

5.Did you notice during the post game conference that Manning would not and did not throw his receivers under the bus? He could have, but didn't. I think that tells us all we have to know about the Indy quarterback. Class act win or lose.

6.The Saints win wasn't just for the team or the fans. This goes to the very core of people with Louisiana ties. I am confident this victory will go very very far in revitalizing the state of Louisiana, the Who Dat nation, and to help the people of that area rebuild and rebirth. The level of pride will be evident to those who frequent or are trying to make the 9th Ward (and elsewhere within the parishioners) liveable, viable, and worth giving a damn about. That's also fine by me.

7.To score on 5 of 6 possessions was amazing. New Orleans bent but did not break. You had a feeling a Dwight Freeny might break down and wilt in the Miami heat late in the 2nd half and he did.

8.Has anyone noticed that Drew Brees went 5-0 against Super Bowl quarterbacks in 2009? I'm just saying. That's an amazing stat.

9.Remember that Mr. Brees was turned down by the Dolphins to play there after the Chargers let him go. How fitting he exact his revenge in Miami of all places!

10.You saw a proverbial clinic by both quarterbacks in Sunday's game. 106 million fans can't be wrong, can they?

There is going to be one hell of a parade tomorrow in New Orleans. I can only imagine the number of beads that will be flying in the air. is it possible that to be so close in proximity to 'America's Team' that the New Orleans Saints became the 'American Dream'.

To the good people of Louisiana. CONGRATS and enjoy. You deserve it. To the people of Indiana, you will be back. Don't blame Peyton. That other guy with the same sounding name took things one step further.

To the offseason and the games of 'what if?'

Over and out in Big D

Mr. Will
