The Art of The Game...

Happy Hump Day to you, hopefully the weather is treating you better where you are than it is here. After 1 whole day of abundant sunshine and 70 degree weather, the skies have returned to a murky gray with an occasional anointing I like to call misting rain to appease those with a desire to feel like they are living within a Seattle moment. That is not to say it's a bad thing.

I have yet to hear the following as we get nearer to the big game Sunday (and NO, I will not be working!). While a good majority of fans will actually watch the game and get involved in a money pool or a square for big bucks, I know of some who will go to just watch the commercials.

Granted the first half of the game will feature some hilarity, low-brow, T and A, perhaps a political twinge, or a message that might fan the flames or make laugh. I am hearing alot of chatter about a commercial that will be featuring Tim Tebow with his Mom. The commercial will fall along the 'Right To Life' category. My guess is that this commercial will be the one that will be discussed the most at games end Ad-Infinitum.

I recall a time when there wasn't an element of politics in sport. Of course all of that would change one bloody September 5th day in 1972 during the Olympics in Munich Germany. I also recall reading about the furor (no pun intended) when Jesse Owens had his successes in the 1936 Summer Olympics before the eyes of one Adolf Hitler.

Maybe I've had it wrong. Maybe there has always been an element of politics in sports or big time events. It is for this reason that the NFL may have a P.R. problem on it's hands theoretically. To what level of sponsorship do you take a given product?

Fans want to watch a game, get sold on beer, a nice car with a hot model coming out of the front seat, and maybe ponder a brand of energy drink. To show a commercial with a hot-button issue/reaction on either side of the aisle? I smell wardrobe malfunction of the political kind. An off the gridiron hot potato, if you will...

Tim Tebow is a big man and he is a man of conviction. I respect that. What I worry about for his sake is if a commercial like this hurts his chances at achieving a high drafting call come April by the NFL elite. If fans and owners are to judge the polarization of a person by his personal beliefs, should that play into a business decision for the right to play a professional sport?

Maybe this is a whole bunch about nothing. I know the Super Bowl is but a game. The hype that surrounds it rarely measures up. I sincerely hope this commercial I am reading about does not taint the essence of an afternoon where we say goodbye to the most popular sport to watch live or on TV.

Enjoy the procession, enjoy the game, enjoy the ads, and keep the mood light. That's all I'm saying.

Over and out in Big D

Mr. Will
